Unlike the many dotcom casualties of recent years, Yahoo! Australia and NZ has successfully managed its growth with the provision of internet media and communications services to businesses and consumers. With increasing confidence and market profile its original 'start up' office had become ineffective under the pressures of personnel growth and the development of the company's operating style.

Yahoo!'s new office fitout is positioned to represent a significant maturing of the organisation and importantly recognises the impact of a true team based workstyle and a fast developing brand image reflecting spontaneity and reliable service.

According to Todd Hammond of WHOdesign, the building form had a significant influence on the planning outcome of the new work environment. A long and relatively shallow floorplate gave rise to a linear planning approach. Individuals have given up notions of building their personal space for the sake of the whole; a sense of spaciousness is evident despite the efficiency and modesty of the accommodation standards. These space and functional constraints have led the development of a purpose designed desking system by Schiavello that responds to the users' unique needs.

The key to workplace flexibility for Yahoo! is driven by simplicity in planning and detail; everyone works on one large central table. "There is one common space standard, one primary workzone on each of two floors, centralised facilities areas and a common standard of services and communications infrastructure supporting the whole," explains Hammond.

Working with the WHOdesign team, Schiavello and their purpose designed desking solution was developed based on Schiavello's Ultimet workstation componentry, complementing a bright, youthful palette. As workstyle and team structures change, everyone can simply move with their personal Systemet mobile storage without any structural change to the fitout.

Employees' were overwhelmingly favourable to their new workspace because the styling was responsive to their individual needs and clearly reflects the energetic and youthful character of the company, with the typical references to corporate livery.
