Avenues of communication

"Conventional office plans are good for allowing communication with each worker but they are not good for concentration," says Ms Y Naoe, designer for PLUS Design Center.

And she's not alone in her view; creating an office layout for a large number of workers that allows maximum concentration is undeniably one of the significant challenges organisations face these days, and certainly proved a test in the planning of FDK Corporation's new office environment. Though the fact that it was selected as one of the winners of the 15th Nikkei New Office Award and is receiving acclaim as a model of office planning indicates designers PLUS Design Center, together with Schiavello, well and truly grasped the FDK's vision.

As one of Japan's top manufacturers of batteries, lighting devices and electronic parts, FDK sought to modify their factory to incorporate planning, development, design, promotion and sales. The aim was to create a balance between a place of intense work, in an environment where uniformed workers are involved in precision labour, and a place of concentrated mental focus.

PLUS Design Center worked with Schiavello to strike this balance by reconfiguring the office layout from an island arrangement to a hexagonal one. By introducing a 135-degree boomerang desk, PLUS and Schiavello enabled workers to communicate face-to-face, while also doubling the floor area available to each individual. The boomerang desk is gently curved, allowing for more efficient space use across an expanded tabletop while the finishes enhance the ambiance.

"The nature and tone of natural wood makes workers feel relaxed," adds Mr Y Narishige, Corporate Communications Manager for FDK Corporation. Built besides one of Japan's most picturesque lakes with a view of Mt Fuji, FDK's new factory has been designed with consideration to the natural surrounds. The new office seamlessly incorporates FDK's various work styles and has provided an environment where concentration and communication are enhanced.

Product note:

The FDK office includes a hexagonal layout featuring 135-degree boomerang desks incorporating Schiavello Newtech desking and System 55 panels, enabling immediate group discussions and doubling the floor area of individual workers. Newtech desks are gently curved with a 650mm to 750mm depth to achieve psychological distance, efficient use of space and an expanded desktop area. This facilitates work-related discussions with limited disturbance to other workers.

Ultimet partitions isolate meeting rooms from main traffic areas.
