Energy embodied

International energy company ConocoPhillips is a global giant when it comes to energy, operating in more than 40 countries around the world. Needless to say, its Australian headquarters in Perth exude the level of sophistication and innovation befitting an international heavyweight in this highly competitive industry.

Having operated from three different sites for some time, it was prudent that ConocoPhillips' Perth staff be housed together in one contemporary facility. Hence new premises in a burgeoning area on the edge of the city's CBD were commissioned, creating a cohesive new workplace. The resulting low-rise building is slick and angular, set back amid lush landscaping. A gently curved façade welcomes visitors into the premises and, once within, they are treated to a stylish reception area with Scandinavian-inspired furniture and timber-slat feature walls.

This area and the entire interior fitout were designed and managed by design firm Blake Thornton-Smith. Their first priority when interpreting the brief was to allow as much natural light penetrate the interior as possible. To further enhance the brightness of the office, white has been used extensively in both gloss and matt throughout. The rest of the palette is rich and sophisticated, combined with timber for warmth.

Maximising flexibility and mobility of furniture components in the interior was crucial to accommodate fluctuations in staff numbers and duties, a problem of the nature of the business. Schiavello's expert WA team in conjunction with Blake Thornton-Smith specified components that could be quickly and easily adapted by staff themselves.

The configuration of Schiavello QED workstations is based around a central spine made up of the Unimet System. This versatile spine element contains services and supports cantilevered work surfaces. Mobile QED desks and storage units can be locked onto either side of it allowing for flexible work patterns and staff movement. Fabric covered privacy panels on the QED desks screen corridor areas and between workstations.

Additionally, the QED's system of sliding panels - fabric or whiteboard clad magnetic boards - open at top and bottom are used to pin the much-used maps on. These can slide back into one another to leave a single door width when shut.

All in all, this sophisticated design treatment makes for a high-energy environment, in which employees and clients alike are at the cutting edge of corporate life.
