Office Space, it’s a Big Issue

Schiavello is proud to be able to assist in providing The Big Issue with a new office space, with Schiavello Construction completing all aspects of the interior construction.

Schiavello became involved in this project through their relationship with Westpac, when Westpac advised that they would be leasing out space at one of their central city locations at a charitable lease rate.
“When we heard the space needed a new fit out we offered to do the project at cost price as we wanted to extend on the generosity that Westpac had shown,” Schiavello Contract Manager, Carmelo Rositano said.
Schiavello was responsible for all aspects of the fit out, from cleaning up and demolishing the dilapidated space, to new electrical, mechanical and fire protection service works, the construction of partitions, doors, joinery and a new kitchen within the space.

“Through our partnership with Westpac we were introduced to Schiavello who have done a truly remarkable job in transforming an unused basement to a first class office that The Big Issue staff and our program participants will benefit from for years to come,”  The Big Issue, Business Manager, Tim Dempster said.
The project required completion in five weeks, with only a sketch layout plan to work from, including cleaning out the space. This saw the team pull together to ensure the work was completed in the required timeframe, which included the cooperation of Westpac, UGL and the consultant team of Geyer and ECM Group and of course the trust of the The Big Issue.

“To be provided with the use of a new custom designed office space is an opportunity that we never thought would be available to us and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity, commitment and hard work of everyone involved, “Dempster said.

Schiavello’s latest products, Street Art and Japanese crepes were the order of the day at the Schiavello SA showroom for Designer Saturday on 5 November 2011.

ore than 250 designers and friends checked out Schiavello’s latest workplace program, Climate and the new range of Climate elements, as well as Schiavello’s new occasional collection, the Humanscale Horizon task light and a range of Schiavello’s Healthcare furnishing products.

Guests chatted over champagne and Japanese crepes in the morning and fine wines and international cheeses in the afternoon while viewing Schiavello’s latest products. An artist got creative on a 12 metre long blackboard showcasing images of Schiavello products and the day finished with designers and Schiavello crew creating graffiti pieces on a shipping container owned by Schiavello.

“The day was a great opportunity to showcase our latest range of products in a relaxing, fun and creative environment. We had a great response from the guests and the crepes were very popular,” Schiavello SA Systems Team Leader, Arron Durham said.

Schiavello and Savills Project Management talk workplace trends

Schiavello’s Workplace Research Psychologist, Keti Malkoski, was recently invited to be a key note speaker at a Savills Project Management round table discussion on Workplace Trends. Her presentation focused on Activity Based Working (ABW), a physical workplace environment where no occupant has an assigned desk: rather the workplace provides employees with a variety of settings that allow them to do specific tasks in tailored work settings.

Discussion looked at the potential organisational branding benefits of ABW, the influence of ABW on attraction and retention strategies and the type of work and people that match ABW.

Keti highlighted some workforce analysis that should be conducted before organisations consider ABW.
“There are many issues to consider with ABW including the challenges it may impose on effective team development and the complex change management process required to reinforce the behavioural changes from employees and managers.

“Employees between and even within generations have varying needs that should be considered and satisfied before they can commit to an organisation. The ‘social’ dimension of work should not be dismissed, especially if you want to foster commitment from Generation Y. At the end of the day we are still humans existing within the workplace and we have an innate need to own our own workspace and express who we are in that workspace by way of personalisation,” Keti said.

Exploring the different areas, viewing the new product collection and socialising were all part of the experience for visitors to ‘The Village’ installation at the Schiavello Sydney showroom for Saturday in Design on 20 August 2011.

More than 2000 visitors flowed through the showroom and experienced the transformation to become The Village. Visitors kicked back in the Green House and the Town Hall, relaxing on the new Kush collection, a range of oversized floor cushions. Guests congregated on the Village Green to view Schiavello’s paradigm shifting workplace program ‘Climate’.

In the Farm House people got creative with the Schiavello shout outs, getting their photo taken with their message scrawled on a speech bubble. In the Media Station designers including Ivan Woods and Chris Bosse from Lava were interviewed giving their views on design, while vox pops with visitors took place all around The Village. On the ground floor guests watched avant-garde fashion designers and Climate collaborators S!X create an installation using ‘Climate’.

“The Village paid homage to diversity and the diverse elements and people that make up a village, while offering a unique backdrop for visitors to experience our products in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Peter Schiavello, Managing Director.

Schiavello’s Workplace Research Psychologist speaks to a Master’s class

As part of Sydney University’s Master’s of Facility Management unit, Organisational Behaviour and Analysis, Schiavello’s Workplace Research Psychologist, Keti Malkoski presented a session titled ‘The User and the Workplace’.

Malkoski’s lecture discussed Schiavello’s commitment to on-going research and focused on the user-centric approach to workplace considerations.

“I had been collaborating with Kristen Smith and her change management company, Change Angels, when she asked me to speak to her Master’s class,” Malkoski said.

From a research perspective, the lecture explored the meaning of a ‘flexible workplace’ from the individual, team or organisation user. User ‘needs’ and the requirement of these needs to be reflected in the workplace were discussed: physical, functional work and psycho-social user needs. The positive influence of user diversity on the workplace was also discussed in addition to the importance of identity expression by way of personalisation.

“The lecture created interesting discussions with the participants. They provided different examples of working styles and patterns that were relevant to the physical workplace. Examples of personalisation activities were discussed and the meanings of these activities in relation to work and personal identities were explored,” Malkoski said.
