Video: Bringing Geyer’s WRAPPED to life for the Emergency Shelter Exhibition

Schiavello was pleased to work with Geyer, one of Australia’s leading strategic design practices, to bring their design concept, WRAPPED, to life for the Emergency Shelter Exhibition in Melbourne.

The purpose of this unique humanitarian challenge was to engage leading Australian and international architects to propose emergency shelter concepts that could not only protect people from the rain, cold, and other elements in emergency situations, but also provide a space to feel secure and comfortable in a disastrous environment.

The Schiavello design and engineering team worked closely with Geyer to develop their design for buildability, and assemble the materials machined on-premise by our manufacturing division.

Geyer’s concept, WRAPPED, provides a personal space to provide a sense of place and ownership: “An evolving cocoon protects and nurtures those affected by disaster; providing support and comfort for displaced people. WRAPPED empowers inhabitants by providing them with the means to adapt their space for privacy, dignity and security, resulting in a unique architectural vernacular within the recovery zone.”

It was a highly collaborative effort between Geyer, Schiavello’s furniture, manufacturing, design and engineering divisions, as well as external suppliers of raw material, which yielded this fantastic result for exhibition visitors to enjoy.

Schiavello congratulates Geyer on the realisation of this unique contribution to The Emergency Shelter Exhibition.  The exhibition, featuring concepts from 10 different architecture firms, is on now through May 5, 2013 at Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Check out the video to learn more about how this concept was brought to life.

Schiavello to Bring Geyer’s Emergency Shelter Concept to Life at Federation Square

In 2011, there were 72 million people living as forced migrants due to disasters, conflict and development around the world.

The Emergency Shelter Exhibition, coming soon to Melbourne, is a unique, humanitarian project that engages some of the leading architectural innovators to explore solutions to emergency shelters that not only protect people from the elements in emergency situations, but also provide a space to feel secure and comfortable, which is fundamental to the recovery process.

Geyer, one of Australia’s leading strategic design practices, has engaged Schiavello to bring their design concept, WRAPPED, to life. Working in collaboration with Geyer, Schiavello’s design and engineering team will help develop the design for buildability, and assemble the materials machined on-premise by our manufacturing division.

The completed shelter will be installed and on display at Melbourne’s Federation Square from May 1-5th.

Visit the Emergency Shelter Exhibition website for more on the exhibit, and visit Geyer to learn more about their unique design concept, WRAPPED.

The Building of a Pop-Up Melbourne Icon

The Building of a Pop-Up Melbourne Icon: The Urban Coffee Farm & Brew Bar from Schiavello on Vimeo.

As we enter into the final week of Melbourne’s Food & Wine Festival, we wanted to share the story of how the Urban Coffee Farm & Brew Bar, the true centrepiece of the festival, came to be.

Designed and developed by HASSELL’s Young Designers Group for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the temporary cafe interprets a terraced coffee farm and tells the story of where our coffee comes from.

Embracing the opportunity to contribute to an exciting community project so intertwined with Melbourne’s rich culture, Schiavello Construction took on the unique task of building a bespoke structure for the project.

With a team of six, Schiavello Construction helped HASSELL turn three Port of Melbourne shipping containers, 1,305 raw timber pallets, 175 coffee trees and over a thousand additional trees and plants into the remarkable pop-up icon on display at Queensbridge Square through March 17th.

One of the most unique aspects of the project was transforming once-empty shipping containers into a bistro and kitchen. Guided by HASSELL, Schiavello handled the interior construction, installing rustic, raw plywood wall panelling and custom joinery with black laminate and white tiled bench tops.

With nearly 50,000 people passing by the site each day, safety was a top consideration, as was ensuring a minimal disturbance to the area’s commuters, workers, tourists and residents. Schiavello congratulates HASSELL for developing such a creative concept, and is honoured to have been a partner.

We hope you enjoy the video, “The Building of a Pop-Up Melbourne Icon: The Urban Coffee Farm & Brew Bar.”

Schiavello Partners with HASSELL to Create Caffeine Hit at Melbourne Food and Wine Festival

In celebration of the lively food, wine and coffee culture that separates Melbourne from the rest, Schiavello has partnered with multidisciplinary design practice HASSELL to create the Urban Coffee Farm and Brew Bar for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.  Officially launching today, the Urban Coffee Farm is a true centrepiece for the 2013 festival, placed in the middle of Queensbridge Square, where nearly 50,000 people travel by foot each day.

The concept, designed and developed by HASSELL’s Young Designers Group for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, interprets a terraced coffee farm, and tells the story of where our coffee comes from, tracing it from cultivation to cup. Inspired by the coffee farms and landscapes of Guatemala, this world-first installation seeks to educate the public about the origins of our coffee; where it’s been grown, and how it travels to its final destination.

Schiavello’s Construction division was pleased to take on the unique task of building the bespoke structure using Port of Melbourne shipping containers and over a thousand raw timber pallets to set the scene.

Check back next week for a video telling the story of how Schiavello built this exciting pop-up city icon.

The link between Schiavello, great food, wine and coffee runs deep in our company culture, one of the many aspects that attracted us to this event. It was also a chance to contribute to an exciting community event that all Melbournians can engage with.

Further,  Atlantic Group [V], a subsidiary of Schiavello Group, will be offering a special all day menu including bites designed by Italian baker and pastry artist Alessandro Urilli, head baker at Atlantic Group [V]’s Mill and Bakery at Central Pier.

HASSELL and Schiavello win Best Temporary Design at Eat-Drink-Design Awards

The inaugural Eat-Drink-Design Awards were announced last night at Melbourne’s Crown Metropol, where around 300 designers, architects, and their hospitality clients from Australia and New Zealand gathered to celebrate. The new annual awards program speaks to the passion, creativity and rigour of designers and operators who create brilliant hospitality destinations.

Eight winners and twenty-four high commendations were awarded from a shortlist of 157 projects, and one restaurant was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

HASSELL and Schiavello were awarded the Best Temporary Design for their Chasing Kitsune project, with the judges commenting: “Capturing the imagination of the Melbourne food and design community, with its synergy between compact form, a tight selection of Japanese food and drink, and urban extemporaneity, Chasing Kitsune demonstrates that memorable dining experiences can be simple and spontaneous. Despite its deliberately restricted material, formal and gastronomic palette, there is a great degree of ingenuity, adaptability and accessibility in the design. With its evocation of both traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, Chasing Kitsune achieves a remarkably rich conversation between culture, the city and the senses.”

Schiavello congratulates HASSELL for developing this imaginative concept and is honoured to have been a partner. Constructing the truck in six days from a bare van to a fully functional kitchen, the team looked after all joinery, arranged the logistics, consulted on design resolution and developed solutions with structural integrity in mind.

Schiavello wins apprentice employer of the year at Master Builders Association of Victoria 2012 Apprentice awards

Joe Schiavello with Jason O'Hara from Grocon
Schiavello was announced Employer of the Year and Schiavello apprentice Fabian Guseli was awarded Apprentice of the Year for offsite construction (joinery) at the Master Builders 2012 Apprentice awards on Wednesday 9 May.

Fabian Guseli is presented with award from Darren Doggett from ASOFIA
Schiavello apprentice Fabian Guseli was awarded best over the entire course for offsite construction (joinery) based on his skills and ability to master his trade with a mature approach and excellent communication and leadership skills.

Schiavello was awarded the Employer of the Year, Brian Fitzmaurice Memorial Award for a contribution to training and apprenticeships.

“Schiavello has shown a dedication and commitment to learning and education with the 50 plus apprentices that they currently employ being given the opportunity to not only finish a trade, but also further their career. Schiavello’s long history of employing quality apprentices is seen through their own dedicated training facility,” Master Builders Association of Victoria Careers Manager, Jarrod Flanigan says.

Schiavello has developed an onsite training facility for its 50 carpentry and joinery apprentices.
The onsite training facility provides more flexible, relevant and responsive training for Schiavello’s apprentices and improves the connection between on and off the job training with a solely dedicated onsite teacher, Nick Del Grosso provided by Victoria University.

“It’s great to be formally recognised for our commitment to skills development. Setting up a dedicated onsite training facility provides our apprentices with a first-class fully equipped workshop and access to a wide range of machinery and technologies which enhances the apprentice learning experience,” Schiavello Managing Director, Peter Schiavello says.
