Schiavello
Scoops Master Builders Awards for its New
Headquarters
July 2006
Schiavello is proud to announce its recent
wins at the Master Builder’s Association
of Victoria Awards for Excellence in Construction
2006. The awards were announced at a Presentation
Evening held on Saturday,
1 July 2006 at the Grand Hyatt, Melbourne.
Schiavello was awarded three prestigious
awards for the design and construction of
its recently completed Corporate Headquarters
in Tullamarine, Victoria, including: Excellence
in Shop and Office Fitout, Excellence in
Construction of Commercial Buildings $20
million - $30 million, and the esteemed
Master Builder of the Year Award [builders
Crema Camillio + Schiavello].
In announcing Schiavello and Crema Camillo
as the Master Builder of the Year, association
executive director Brian Welsh said the
construction of the Schiavello Group’s
Headquarters in Tullamarine was an example
of how advanced the Victorian building industry
had become – displaying innovation
and the highest possible levels of workmanship.
Mr Welsh said Schiavello Group’s
new headquarters was an energy efficient
design that used new technology and quality
finishes – a shining example of how
Victoria was at the cutting edge of modern
construction.
“This stunning building is a fine
example of world’s best practice in
building,” he said.
Schiavello’s managing director, Tony
Schiavello, said the awards for the Schiavello
headquarters facility are a reflection of
what Schiavello produce for its clients.
The new Schiavello Group headquarters facility,
which was officially opened by the Premier
of Victoria, The Hon. Steve Bracks MP on
Friday 9 December, has been designed to
provide a healthy and comfortable working
environment for its employees.
“[The opening of this facility] is
a great occasion because we are not just
celebrating the success of one of the industry’s
world-class performers; we are also celebrating
what that success shows. The ongoing success
– and ongoing commitment – of
the Schiavello Group is such an inspiration,”
said the Premier, Mr. Bracks.
“The manufacturing sector in general
– and the furniture manufacturing
sector in particular – needs icons
like Schiavello. We need to be reminded
that Victorian manufacturing can be –
and is – world class. Just as this
new facility is world class,” he said.
Schiavello introduces Kayt, a new seating
+ small table programme, suitable for domestic
and commercial cultures. An upholstered
seating programme, Kayt has a very distinctive
line expressing the connection between the
seat and back elements. It is this graphic
device that creates a unique language common
to all units within the programme but distinguishing
it from many others in this typology.
“Kayt’s typology is omnipresent,
the point of difference being its form,
details and quality,” explains Schiavello
designer, Ivan Woods.
Kayt is designed to embrace the whole spectrum
of seating requirements for commercial work
and residential living environments, with
the exception of task seating. Its contemporary,
restrained and elegant form combined with
its range and flexibility allows it to fit
into any style of interior from informal
breakout areas, boardrooms and reception
areas through to high-end residential and
apartment interiors.
Kayt’s legs are 16 mm diameter stainless
steel in satin or polished finish. The stunning
complementary range of low tables is finished
in veneer, paint powder coated mdf or laminate.

Molo
softwall + softsurface
May 2006
The softwall provides a simple solution
to complex living.
Schiavello is pleased to announce its exclusive
distribution of the Molo textile softwall
and textile softsurface to the Australian
market. The softwall can be used to literally
transform a space by creating a dynamic
partition, or sculptural backdrop.
Canadian architects Todd MacAllen and Stephanie
Forsythe began the development of softwall
in response to a problem: can we create
a dynamic architecture letting people shape
their own living and working spaces according
to changing
life conditions.
The answer was softwall; a lightweight
fold out fine textile wall for open plan
houses, workplaces, exhibits and other open
venues.
“We liked the idea that people themselves
can manipulate the space where they live
and work,” explains
Todd MacAllen.
The textile softwall is made from a highly
durable non-woven textile material which
is tear resistant and water resistant. The
textile softwall expands to form a beautiful,
white, translucent, freestanding modular
wall. The textile softwall is easy to handle
and maintain, and is forgiving of relatively
rough handling and demanding applications.
The textile softwall [1.8 metres tall and
30 cm thick] can be expanded from 5 cm when
compressed to form a freestanding wall of
anywhere between 2.5 metres and 8 metres
in length and weighs just over 10 kg. It
is available in white, with natural wool
felt ends with Velcro fasteners that can
link walls together.
The textile softsurface expands to form
a lower, wider partition that creates a
useful surface area. softsurface is made
from highly durable non-woven textile material
which is tear resistant and water resistant
and is easy to handle and maintain.
The textile softsurface can be expanded
from 5 cm when compressed to form a freestanding
partition / surface of anywhere between
2.5 metres to 8 metres with a 45 cm width.
It is available in white, with natural wool
felt ends, and weighs just 7 kg.

SCHIAVELLO VIC FITOUT WINS
MASTER BUILDERS AWARD
May 2005
Schiavello was recently awarded a
win at the Master Builders Association
of Victoria Awards for Excellence
in Construction 2005. The VicUrban
project [featured in Details 23] was
awarded the honours for Excellence
in Shop and Office Fitout for the
Commercial & Retail category.
Together with design firm, HASSELL,
Schiavello’s Fitout Team worked
within a tight programme in the role
of Lead Contractor, involved in managing
all subcontractors on site to complete
the fitout. This included coordination
of works relating to electrical, mechanical,
fire, plumbing, painting, ceilings,
joinery, work areas, and carpet/vinyl
layers of the fitout.
“We understand projects of
this nature at VicUrban, it is our
business to, but for a builder to
deliver a 12-14 week project in 9
weeks is extraordinary. We couldn’t
be happier with Schiavello’s
performance on this project,”
said Kris Daff, client representative
at VicUrban.
WINNER
ANNOUNCED FOR SCHIAVELLO SPONSORED
MILAN AWARD FOR YOUNG DESIGNERS
April 2005
The City of Melbourne, together with
sister city Milan, today announced
the overall winner of the City of
Milan 2005 Young Foreign Designers
Award, who will receive paid industry
placement working with leading designers
and manufacturers in Milan.
From the initial group of 60 invited
designers, Australian judges selected
seventeen works for exhibition at
the Fondazione Triennale De Milano
design gallery during the celebrated
Milan International Furniture Fair
(Salone Del Mobile), at which a panel
of Italian design experts today announced
Linda Jukic as the overall winner
of the City of Milan 2005 Young Foreign
Designers Award.
Linda’s entry, titled “See
For Yourself”, is designed to
represent different facets of Milan’s
cultural life in the form of information
cards. Packaged sets of five random
cards, stickers and a map would be
available throughout the city, in
all the spaces and places that the
cards represent and describe.
The distribution of the cards encourages
visitors to locate and accumulate
further sets of cards in order to
discover more of Milan – navigating,
engaging and involving themselves
with the connecting web and form of
the city.
With major sponsor Schiavello, invitations
and project briefs were sent to 60
young Australian designers in a variety
of fields including architecture,
interior design, jewellery, graphic
design, digital multimedia, industrial
design and fashion.
The designers were asked to respond
to a specific brief from the City
of Milan to create an ‘immersion
kit’ which will open the city
to visitors and to make it more welcoming
by offering them the opportunity to
participate in Milan’s social
and cultural life.
The exhibition returns to Melbourne
on 7 July, 2005 at BMW Edge in Federation
Square.
SCHIAVELLO
SPONSORS MILAN AWARD FOR YOUNG DESIGNERS
December 2004
This year Melbourne and Milan
formed a sister-city relationship with design
identified as a link between the two cities
and its people. The 2005 City of Milan Award
for Young Foreign Designers project, with
Schiavello as a major sponsor, is the first
official design project between the two
cities and aims to enhance the activities
underpinning this new relationship.
The aim of the competition
is to select talents, explore new ideas
and new approaches in the use of design,
and offer creative access, during a three
month period, to Milan’s research
and design centres.
The City of Melbourne has invited 50 emerging
Australian designers to submit work in this
project. From the work submitted 20 pieces
will be chosen to be part of the City of
Milan Award 2005 for Young Foreign Designers.
An exhibition of the selected
20 works will be displayed at the world
renowned Triennale di Milano design gallery
at the same time as the Milan International
Furniture Fair, the “Salone del Mobile”.
Of the 20 pieces selected to be in the exhibition,
one designer will be awarded an invitation,
by a panel of Milanese judges, to spend
three months immersed in the design world
of Milan.
With the support of Schiavello,
this multi-disciplinary program seeks to
capture the diversity of Australian design
and explore the very special sister-city
relationship shared with Milan.
“Schiavello’s
involvement with this project stems from
our commitment to the art of design. We
actively work closely with local and international
designers to set new standards in workplace
environments to enhance human performance,
corporate cultures and environmental sustainability,”
said Peter Schiavello.
The exhibition will return
to Australia and be on display during July
at BMW Edge in Federation Square, Melbourne.

Schiavello
Introduces Tom
June 2004
The new and multitalented Tom stool –
sit, stand, stack, store.
Schiavello is pleased to announce the addition
of Tom to its seating range. Tom has been
exclusively designed by Korban/Flaubert
for Schiavello to provide a playful stool
with a wide variety of applications.
Tom’s design consists of a simple,
pure, invertible form, where cone meets
cylinder. Tom lends a sense of fun and individuality
to the home, office, café, retail
outlet and playground.
Tom is the result of a series of model
experiments merging cones and cylinders
to suit its many purposes. “We like
to investigate elementary geometries for
furniture and objects; providing simple
solutions for a complicated world,”
explains Stefanie Flaubert.
Tom can be flipped over to reveal a different
profile and purpose. Use it as a side table,
foot stool or for additional seating. Made
of indestructible polypropylene, Tom’s
composition enables indoor and outdoor use.
“We wanted it to be used inside or
outside: why should outdoor furniture look
so different from indoor furniture? We should
be able to sit inside or out, and not have
to buy differentiated equipment for the
same basic function,” adds Stefanie
Flaubert.
